Traveling in Japan with children no longer requires sacrificing adult pursuits. Parents are outsourcing playtime to others and everyone involved seems happier.
When Parental Preferences are Sushi and Children’s Activities
Parents enjoy high-end sushi with no guilt and no time constraints at all while their children are engrossed in crafts, playing, or practicing deep breathing in a peaceful Zen Temple. Sounds unbelievable right? Well it’s really not too farfetched—it’s actually becoming fairly standard practice in Japan as the number of family visitation has grown significantly asia.
As a result of this increase in family tourism, Japan has creatively adapted and begun offering English-speaking babysitting services specifically for foreign travelers. .
A You Didn’t See it Coming Trend
The continued rise in the number of international visitors–particularly families–has resulted in the development of a new travelling practice. Instead of dragging their exhausted children through lengthy dining experiences or around congested areas in cities, many parents are now hiring professional caregivers for several hours so that they can have a break away from their kids.
The leftover babysitters who are being hired are not who most think they are. The left-behind services are structured, certified and designated specifically to cover foreign tourists who do not know how to speak Japanese.
Children Are Not “Forgotten”
This is not a case of dropping off children and leaving. The kids will get a brief itinerary of activities. Arts and crafts, leisurely walks in a park setting, tours of kindergartens, cultural activities, etc., along with the opportunity to rest at a zen temple.
The children experience the same place, but at a pace and in a way that they can actually handle.
One Family’s Experience in Tokyo
At the end of November, Kelvin Young went to Tokyo with his family and took advantage of one of these services. He and his wife found a caregiver through a company called Synk, who spoke English, and left their two daughters (aged 5 and 2) at their hotel for 4 hours while they went out to a nice sushi dinner. The parents had a nice meal, and the kids had fun doing arts and crafts, and then showing off their crafts to their parents the next day. Thus, the parents had a good time, and the kids had a good time as well.
The Business Behind the Recent Boom in Childcare Services
Synk, a startup from Kamakura, Japan, began operating in April. In less than six months, Synk has received 50 requests from foreign visitors looking for English speaking childcare providers while visiting Japan. Synk currently has 9 nationally certified caregivers and an English speaking nurse on staff.
Prices for three hours of service are approximately ¥54,000+, and services offered by businesses are not restricted to hotels; nature walks, playtime, temple visits, and interactive cultural experiences are all available to children.
The primary goal of all these companies is to allow parents to relax without worrying about their children while providing engaging and safe environments for their children.
Japan Isn’t the Only Market
A number of other businesses are jumping on this bandwagon. For example, a major Tokyo childcare provider is expanding its search for multilingual caregivers. In addition to providing caregivers, many hotels, such as one large hotel chain in Nagoya, allow guests to book their babysitters online prior to their arrival.
How It Makes Perfect Sense Right Now
There were about 37 million foreign tourists visiting Japan in 2024. A huge number of them were extremely young children, so there is a large number of people with special needs.
With the transition in travel from “see everything” to “enjoy the moment,” there is a shift in the way we think about providing childcare for guests as part of their travel experiences rather than simply something that needs to be taken care of once they arrive at their destination.
To Sum It Up
Japan has not only made Tourism more Family-Friendly, but it has also made it Parent-Savvy. This shift toward providing children their own meaningful experiences, while providing Adults some peace of mind, is helping to change what stress-free Family Vacation means. And to be completely honest, it’s kind of brilliant!
