Picture yourself as a traveler navigating through Spiti Valley’s beautifully cold and rugged roads in Himachal Pradesh, India. This is not a scene from a documentary; it actually happened.

I mean, this wasn’t a documentary film. But instead, something much more complex, ‘A reality of travelers on the 5th of May in 2025.’ All of their imaginations were put into mystery while they were between Kaza and Nako. After they crossed Tabo, there came into sight a snow leopard, which Voyaging.

Spot (pun intended) snow leopard effortlessly strolling along the sidewalk, totally unfazed by the cluster of humans in cars moving towards it. The vehicles’ cameras document the scene of snow leopard—white-gray fur camouflaging into the atacama rocky and snowy backdrop—looking back ahead of him and, “You guys are done yet,” keeping the caption along his fur and indeed, it was done intricately.

Jatin Gupta is one such tourists, who besides sharing the undeniable moment claimed it to be ‘history in the making.’ The comparison wouldn’t be utterly off base.

“Somewhere around 6 to 7 PM, we were driving through this surreal mountain stretch. Then, boom. A snow leopard, just walking on the road like it’s no big deal,” he would write in the post. “It looked like a ghost melting into the Spiti rocks.”

Internet: Shook

The clip went viral rather quickly. Comments poured in from every corner. Some were straight up envious, wishing they were there to experience the so-called, “ghost of the mountains”. Others were just in utter disbelief.

A lot of people had very strong opinions that the worrying the specific detailed location of this sighting would indeed draw the wrong crowd. You know, poachers and all. Highlighting places where snow leopards is the last thing they need after the constant battle for survival.

Mind the Gap

The poachers had every right to be excited and who wouldn’t, right? But the tourists maintained a respectful distance. You can listen to the video them reminding each other about getting too close. One whispers, “He’s probably trying to get away from us.” The other responds, “Don’t spook him or he might charge. That glass won’t save us.”

Now this is something I actually appreciate for once; observing people looking at nature in a respectful manner while still feeling amazed.

Ghost of the Mountains

With the name “mountain ghost,” snow leopards live up to their nickname, because they are extremely difficult to find even during the summer months. Their camouflage is highly effective—they disappear into the scenery as if by some trickery.

That’s the kind of moment which makes a trip and does not just define it.

Like I said, next time you head towards the mountains, make sure to keep your eyes wide open because something mind-blowing could be thrown your way.
