When Killer Whales Decide to Play Bumper Cars with Boats

Portugal72 Views

Let’s clarify this from the start: sailing off the coast of Portugal lately appears to be a bit like stepping into an orca boxing ring. Boats leave the harbor, whales show up, hulls are smashed, and rescue teams may find themselves involved. Thankfully, no lives were lost this time — but the drama of the sea is certainly there.

The “Unexpected” Scenario

Imagine this, five of us aboard a recreational cruise at Fonte de Telha, Portugal. The sun is shining, the water is flat, and bang! A black and white torpedo strikes the port side of the vessel. It wasn’t just once, it wasn’t just twice – it was time and again until the boat began to go down. To make matters even better, all was documented on video with the (quite frightened) excited commentary in the background.

Not Just a “One-Off Episode”

Then here is the best part, earlier in the day in Cascais Bay, guess what? The orcas were at it again – providing another boat with the same “special treatment.” Four on that boat were lucky enough to be rescued, unharmed! But as the saying goes, you have to start thinking this is not just coincidence, but a trend.

What the Authorities Said

According to Portugal’s National Maritime Authority, they had received an alert about an “interaction with orcas” (which is an understatement). Coast guard crews rushed to the area, evacuated passengers and ensured everyone was okay, or at least not too injured. Honestly, no one was humane, but they were not injured.

Eyewitnesses and Practical Theories

Some eyewitnesses say they saw four orcas circling, while one skipper stated the whale was the same single whale damaging the rudder. To be honest, if one watch makes the rudder bend, it will do it every time — they don’t misbehave. Regardless, it adds to a larger log of interactions, which researchers have identified as confirmations of whale behavior in close proximity to vessels, which have been reported and documented in various locations since 2020.

The usage of the term for researchers has spiraled into hundreds of documented cases for researchers all round, at least in western Europe, where the southern coast of Portugal and across the strait to Spain, particularly around the Iberian Peninsula. What is it? Revenge? Play? Gang initiation? Who knows — it remains a tough one.

An Incident That Also Spread Outside of Portugal

It was not just in Portugal. Just this week, two ships off the coast of Galicia, Spain were hit within minutes of each other. Spanish maritime rescue service towed one damaged vessel, and then shortly after, was sent out for another vessel that was struck shortly after.

From the Deck

One of the crew members said it best when they indicated there were scared, actually terrified, when they realized killer whales were slamming into the boat. I can’t blame them; when the oceans apex predator determines your yacht looks like a pillow, its easier to run away than to act brave.

Back to the Beginning or Maybe the End

So here we are: a string of incidences, confused scientists, nervous sailors, and orcas who are acting like rockstars. Whether it is mischief, survival response, or something else we aren’t grasping just yet, these whales are definitely breaking the frame of a peaceful wildlife documentary.
