Specialist divers have completed a survey of the wreckage of a $40 million luxury yacht, which sank off the coast of Sicily in August. The sinking of the superyacht Bayesian resulted in the deaths of seven people, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch. According to BBC, Thursday (26/9/2024), the divers have called for increased security to safeguard the vessel.

There are concerns that sensitive data locked within the yacht’s onboard safe could attract the attention of foreign governments, multiple sources report. Italian prosecutors, who have launched a criminal investigation into potential charges of manslaughter and negligence relating to the sinking of the 56-meter superyacht Bayesian, believe the vessel may contain highly sensitive information.

Four individuals familiar with the investigation and salvage operation have confirmed this. Lynch had connections with intelligence agencies in the UK, the US, and other nations through various companies he owned, including the cybersecurity firm Darktrace, which he co-founded.

The yacht, now resting on the seafloor at a depth of around 50 meters, is believed to contain a waterproof safe with two highly encrypted hard drives storing confidential information. The security includes password codes and other sensitive data, according to an official involved in the salvage operation who spoke on condition of anonymity.
