Two tourists from China tragically lost their lives while on vacation in Penang. The incident occurred while they were at a local tourist site.
According to Channel News Asia, Friday (20/9), the victims were a 50-year-old father and his 30-year-old daughter, who were visiting the Pinang Peranakan Mansion in George Town on Wednesday (18/9).
Penang was experiencing strong winds due to a storm that had hit the area two days prior.
CCTV footage shows the woman taking photos of a large house by the roadside before heading toward a car. The vehicle waited about 40 seconds before preparing to leave the parking lot as another car entered the complex through a single-lane gate.
The car was driven by a local man, who managed to escape before the tree collapsed.
The footage also captured tree branches and leaves shaking violently in the wind just before the incident, as reported by The Star.
Mohammad Syafiq Noor Azman, a spokesperson for the Penang Fire and Rescue Department, told FMT that the victims were a woman in her 30s and a man in his 50s.
He added that parts of a nearby building were also damaged during the incident.
Authorities took around three hours to recover the bodies of the victims.
Earlier on Wednesday, Penang Island City Council Mayor Rajendran Anthony announced plans to remove 54 trees deemed at risk of falling during severe weather.
This operation is scheduled to begin next week and is expected to be completed by mid-October.
Tourists and residents are advised to exercise caution when outdoors.
