Snoring, Silence and Then Gone: A Massage That Ended in Tragedy in Thailand

It should have been just another chill night in paradise. But for Christopher, a 43 -year-old Australian tourist vacationing on the beautiful island of Koh Samui, Thailand – it became the last.

When Relaxation Turns to Disaster

This is not an isolated occurrence. Back in December 2024, a tourist from Singapore, Lee, died after spending 45 minutes lying on the beach having a massage in Patong, Phuket, -he simply stopped breathing in the middle of the massage. Despite attempts to assist him by the staff and emergency personnel, he died.

Fast forward to July 7, 2025: Christopher arrived (alone) at what we can assume was the midnight hour at a massage shop. He was barefoot, ordered a one hour traditional oil massage, and paid the full amount of 400 baht (approximately $11 USD) in full.

A Peaceful Snore… or So They Thought

After the session wrapped up just after midnight, Christopher asked the therapist if he could rest a while on the bed upstairs. The staff member was busy with another client, so she came back about 10 minutes later and heard him snoring loudly — so she left him.

As of 4 AM, he was still snoring. Still no alarms going off. None of her co-workers came in again, then around 6:20 AM, she came back to wake him. But something felt off. Christopher was more than asleep. He was unresponsive.

The Sudden Realization and the Call for Help

She called over other staff members and called 911. Paramedics arrived and sadly confirmed the news that Christopher passed away on the massage bed, in a private upstairs room.

Police arrived around 7 AM to investigate and reported no foul play and an autopsy would be performed to determine the cause of death.

Questions Still Exist, But Not the Pain

Authorities are now working to piece together the final movements of Christopher. Reports say he was traveling with his wife. However, he went into the massage parlor alone on foot from his accommodation, which was near by.

Until we receive the official medical report, the speculation will continue. It could have been a previous health issue, simply fatigue or heat exhaustion. We do not know.

A Pattern We Cannot Ignore?

Two tourists have died after a massage in less than a year. Coincidence or not? These two cases certainly raise questions about the health and safety of tourists, especially when visiting destinations with an entirely different regulatory posture than that of one’s home country.

Thailand is still one of the world’s most visited countries, and for good reason- it’s beautiful, rich in culture and relatively cheap. However, as these two cases demonstrate you need to be prepared for the unexpected even in paradise.
