A lot of Malaysians do not have to travel overseas to take a holiday, with many locals preferring to see what their country has to offer. This has been occurring at a considerable rate over the last few years, especially in 2025. As a result, many Malaysians do not feel the need to travel overseas for a holiday.

Malaysians are also beginning to travel to less traditional destinations. More and more, they are heading for smaller towns and away from major tourist attractions. In addition to that, a growing number of Malaysians are looking for unique experiences, including travelling in solitude to experience nature, exploring the many hidden gems throughout the country or going to places that are not crowded.

Smaller communities are prospering thanks to an increase in local air travel. With more domestic flights available, there are more opportunities than ever before for people to travel to different parts of the country.

People want to have fast, accessible means of travel and will also have many more options available to them when it comes to travelling domestically—without leaving the country. There are many other groups that will also benefit from this trend; small independent retailers and local accommodations, food and tour operators will all benefit from increased domestic travel. The money from domestic travel stays within the country, thus creating a strong economic platform for growth.

This is more than just a tourism concept, it is a method of building a nation’s economy through developing local destination markets.

Interest in eco-tourism, cultural and wellness travel is increasing rapidly as people want to experience things versus just visiting them and Malaysia has many opportunities for that.

Locals are not choosing to stay in the country versus travelling internationally; they are simply comforted by the idea that they do not feel that they are missing out by not travelling internationally.
