If you’ve ever waited in line with thousands of other people just to have a peak at Mona Lisa’s mesmerising painting, you wouldn’t be surprised by this.

It’s Not Just A Museum, It’s The Museum

For people in “not-a-museum-persons” category, the Louvre is simply every other museum on the planet, but does house attracts the Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo, and a plethora of synonymous art, so it is definitely worth visiting at least once in a lifetime.

Who Else Made the Cut?

Who else made it to the museum popularity club? Right after Louvre The Vatican Museums came in second with 6.8 million visitors.

Subsequently we have The British Museum in London which took third place with 6.4 million guests. Ancient mummies, the Rosetta Stone and plenty of controversial treasures packed into one space.

Culture Meets Pop: Met Museum at #4

At number four we have The Met in New York City – that’s right, the very same location which is a recurrent subject of discussion among gossips as celebrities. It’s not only a pop culture landmark, but it also houses an exquisite collection of art from nearly every region of the world. They had 5.7 million people walking through last year.

And rounding out the top five? Tate Modern in London, the Bankside jewel for contemporary art enthusiasts.

A Global Art Party

Something that I found interesting is how nuclear the top 10 list is. Besides the fact that the big Western museums are doing excellent, you will also find places like:

  • East Shanghai Museum (China)
  • National Museum of Korea in Seoul
  • Musée d’Orsay (France)
  • Museo Nacional de Antropología (Mexico City)

People around the world are inclined to spend a day in the museum, and that tells a lot.

Newcomers in the ranking…

It is equally important to mention that two new museums entered the world 100 ranking list. One of them is teamLab Borderless in Tokyo (yes, the Digital Art Museum that recently relocated to Azabudai Hills). The other is Shanghai Museum East which is an extension of the Shanghai Museum original — and it’s already pulling in serious numbers.

Observations

Be it ancient history coupled with digital art or recognizing famous landmarks, museums still remain a unique way to experience time, technology, and culture — all from a single location, within the confines of a building.

If that’s you then perhaps it’s the right time to rethink some trip destinations.
