For many football supporters, obtaining a match ticket is typically the most difficult part of participating in the World Cup. Well, for some owners of 2026 tournament tickets the bigger challenge starts immediately after they complete their ticket purchase.
Excitement about what will likely become one of the largest sporting events in history has resulted in visa problems for thousands of supporters hoping to make the trip to America. Many of the fans have already committed considerable amounts of money to their travel plans only to learn that they may not be allowed to enter the country for the World Cup due to complications regarding their visa applications.
This situation has caused a significant amount of frustration among fans from all of the participating nations as they want to attend this year’s World Cup but fear they may miss it due to their successful team qualifying.
One person who has already experienced some of the same type of frustrations is Abdulla Adnan of Iraq-
After Iraq beat New Zealand and qualified for the 2026 World Cup, Adnan started making his plans to travel with the Iraqis to Canada and take part in cheering for his country’s men’s team as they attempt to bring home a World Cup trophy.
Unfortunately for Adnan there are some visa issues preventing him from getting to the USA this summer with the other supporters.
While not entirely banned from travel, the disruption of visa services caused by unstable security in Iraq has made it difficult for Iraqis like Adnan to attend the World Cup in Qatar. Despite his efforts to find a way to apply for a visa in a neighbouring country, Adnan was unsuccessful.
After purchasing tickets, getting to that country and incurring all of the costs related to attempting to apply for his visa, he was forced to give up trying to obtain one.
It’s not just Adnan who feels this way.
Many supporters from other countries who have qualified for the World Cup are having similar issues. While they expect their teams to do well, the uncertainty of getting their visas is more concerning to them than whether their team will win.
There has been a larger outcry from supporters’ groups representing supporters of different football teams around the world regarding this issue.
Many different types of football fans believe that major international sporting events should bring together all types of fans from around the world. When too many supporters cannot come to the event, this diminishes the spirit of the competition.
The latest visa data show that many applicants from various countries participating have had high rejection rates, and that many did not receive a decision after submitting their applications formally.
Thus, many fans who have been anticipating for years to see their countries compete on the largest stage in the world of football will feel that it was disheartening.
To make things worse, just because fans have purchased a World Cup ticket, they still need to meet immigration requirements in order to gain entry depending upon the country they are trying to gain entry into.
Some fans believe that their official ticket for the match will be the help they need for entry into the country. However, while some of the programs related to the tournament might assist with expedited processing for an appointment to interview for a visa, immigration attorneys stress that a visa is a separate process than buying a ticket to the tournament.
In other words, having a ticket and a seat in a stadium does not guarantee permission to enter that country.
This distinction has stunned some travelers.
Fan leaders have indicated that even if an applicant could provide overwhelming evidence of documentation, documented proof of travel history, and a reasonable plan for attending the tournament, many have still faced issues getting through the visa process. Uncertainty continues to grow within the fan communities in anticipation of the 2026 World Cup.
In the meantime, the tournament organizers and host authorities are on a tenuous path.
The World Cup draws people to one place from parts of the world all bring their country culture to the games to help to create the energy of the event. With fans from all over the world in stadiums full of fans from every country and representing every nationality while there is a significant exchange of cultural values as well.
Governments enforce their immigration laws and conduct security checks. Ultimately, it is the national authority who has the final authority to say who may enter their country to participate in a sporting event that takes place within their country’s borders.
Throughout the tournament, the U.S. stated all visitors from all corners of the world would be welcomed at the tournament but that security screening and visa evaluation will be performed in accordance with existing procedures.
That announcement has had little impact on alleviating anxiety experienced by many of its backers.
With kick-off only a few days away, many fans are still hoping that some sort of resolution to the problems of the visa process will be found, and that enough people who wish to attend will actually make it through to do so. Ultimately, the World Cup is just as much about the millions of fans whose enthusiasm and commitment represent the international character of this event, as it is about the players performing on the pitch.
Without any fans in attendance, football would not be experiencing its greatest celebration in history as we do presently.
