One lesson learned by New York’s tourism industry from the previous statement was that many businesses were concerned that discouraging early booking statistics would lead to poor financial results. To their surprise, an increase in later demand helped restore their faith in New York tourism, creating a chance for hotels to recoup a significant portion of the business they thought they may have lost.
In addition to hotel rooms being affected by the 2014 FIFA World Cup, many economists are also predicting that the World Cup will generate substantial economic activity globally.
Some analysts project that the World Cup will contribute upwards of $20 billion dollars to the global economy and are expecting to see a large portion of that economic activity to occur in the United States from tourism-related revenue, transportation, hospitality, entertainment, and consumer spending.
There are many different types of businesses that retailers, restaurants, transportation services, and attractions will all benefit from each dollar spent by their customers while they are visiting New York City.
Forecasts for tourism generated from all World Cup events combined (in different host cities) have been suggested as potentially exceeding the overall impact tourism generated by each prior major entertainment publication, such as movie releases.
While there has been variability in tourism results at the various host cities, variations in MATCH scheduling, traveller preferences or habits (and local travel patterns) have also contributed to differing degrees of success between each host city.
New York City has found its tentative rhythm and timing at precisely the right point on the calendar.
Experience has taught us that determining success/failure for a global event too early in its development can sometimes be misleading due to the speed at which travel patterns can change as spectator behavior adjustments occur, and key matches approach.
Ultimately, New York’s World Cup story shifted from disappointing to successful through the passage of time, rather than through suffering.
From appearing to be a lost chance/opportunity, The story evolved into one of the premier success stories in the entire tournament regarding tourism. Proving again that the largest crowds at an event do not always come first, they oftentimes show up at just the right moment in relation to the event.
