A straightforward appeal for help regarding her suitcase became an unanticipated controversy in social media for a traveler hailing from Hawaii. After the incident occurred during a trip, Victoria had to withstand overwhelming criticism and insults, as well as threats made by users of the internet.
As per her own words, Victoria shared this story on TikTok. While narrating her way back home from New York to Hawaii, she quickly found herself being engaged in a hot discussion on whether travelers should help their neighbors out in airplanes.
What happened was that Victoria was trying to take a big suitcase into the overhead bin compartment. She was finding it difficult to lift her luggage, so she asked a man nearby to help her out.
The individual in question allegedly declined the request and informed Victoria that she was able to handle the situation on her own. With a queue of individuals behind her, Victoria then mentioned that she started feeling nervous and found that there was pressure to act quickly.
Having been unable to raise the suitcase high and comfortably enough from the ground, in the end, she took a seat and managed to push her luggage to the upper compartment herself. Upon getting down, she said she apologized and thanked the man but he just walked away.
Suitcase Controversy Results in Arguments on Social Media
The video created a division among the internet users with some of them arguing that Victoria could not expect strangers to carry her luggage as it is not a duty for anyone to help. Others said that the man had a chance to be more sensitive to the woman’s needs considering she seemed to struggle in the crowded plane.
The conflict became even more heated when Victoria claimed to have received aggressive messages. Some of the users allegedly called her lazy, egocentric, or overly dependent. Some users even sent her threatening messages.
With the continuing criticism, Victoria decided to create a new video to explain her intentions.
Victoria insisted that she doesn’t feel mad because a man didn’t agree to help her. According to her, everybody is entitled to refuse a request so she doesn’t believe it’s wrong to expect from someone to give her their time and effort.
Victoria also added that it is not the refusal itself that worries her but the situation itself. She said that the refusal is not the main point but the attitude she was treated with.
Victoria Clarifies That There Is No Gender Issue
Furthermore, Victoria rejected any assumptions related to the fact that women believe that men are obliged to help women.
She believes that no matter what their gender is, women cannot expect men to help them simply because they are men and vice versa. For her, kindness should not be connected with the gender as it refers only to human-to-human relationships.
Victoria also mentioned Hawaiian culture, which is characterized by how people embrace the spirit of aloha that means supporting and respecting each other.
However, she admitted her desire to have seen the same approach everywhere she travels may be unrealistic. She then also apologized for the tone of her post.
A heated discussion followed. Would-be supporters claimed travelers do not have to do any decent act of lifting up someone else’s bag, while others pointed out that it is a basic courtesy to help others with heavy luggage.
