Songkran Madness in Thailand: Fun, Water Fights… and 171 Deaths?

Thailand261 Views

If you have travelled to Thailand in mid-April, you would have been captivated by the mesmerizing wild street water fights, and that is of course breathtaking. That my friend, is Songkran — the water festival in Thailand, famous worldwide. It seems like all there is to do is have fun, but no, because this year things seemed to take a tragic turn.

So, in between 2025’s April 11 and 15, Thailand was unfortunately grieving the heart breaking loss of 171 people. The cause? Unfortunately for them, the classic bang bang of Songkran wasn’t the cause, but rather relentless traffic accidents were the bigger problem.

The Countdown Has Commenced

With a thousand other reasons, the authorities have labelled this water festival period as: The Seven Most Dangerous Days of the Year, and looking at how the country has incurred around 1216 road incidents which leads them to acquiring 1208 injuries and 171 deaths over the span of a mere 5 days according to Road Safety Centre in Thailand, the reason is fair enough of concern.

I would not my guess be the only one who is used to the lockdowns intimidating drunk and reckless driving, so let’s chalk that to the most fitting guesses for culprits.

Dangers On Two Wheels

Modern builds of bikes and motorcycles accounted for over 85% of the said accidents, which is quite a number. And to be the first on the list of other common ‘accidents’, these group. They are known as Highways, where over 41.37% of incidents seem to flourish.

No suprise that Bangkok is at the forefront with claiming the most number of fatalities of 15 deaths counting during that incredibly cramped 5 day duration. Right after this though, Phatthalung province seemed to have non stop accidents left and right. Shocking considering the fact that they claimed 44 out of the overall count needed to be documented.

What Actions Are Being Taken?

With the holidays over, the influx of people returning home meant that traffic severely worsened. Thailand’s Ministry of Interior stated that they were coordinating with regional authorities, police, fire

Supplementary services and increased checks were also added to public transport buses, planes, and trains to cope with the surge in travelers. Definitely a smart move.

Fun and Fatal – A Reality Check

Don’t get this wrong – Songkran is still a rich and vibrant celebration. It is centered around new beginnings, family blessings, and yes, splashing water on each other. However, beneath the celebration is the need for safer roads, better conduct, and more awareness, especially during this period of rampant travel.

We hope that next year, the headlines will be angled toward fun without the heavy casualty.
