Forget gondolas and gelato, one American family’s Venetian vacation became a crime story. After trying to find their Airbnb, a couple from North Carolina found themselves surrounded by three teenage girls on a pedestrian bridge. They were like a swarm of bees. Hours later, the mother ended up pulling one of the girls by her hair and holding on to her until the police arrived.
So How Did It All Start?
Initially, they felt just like every other tourist—lots of rolling suitcases, no idea on what bridge their lodging was on, some friendly strangers bumping shoulders. But the nightmare began when the mother opened the zipper of her crossbody bag in the rental, only to discover it was completely open and her wallet was gone, along with cash, credit cards, AirPods, and passports.
On the bright side, her AirPods were discoverable using “Find My”. With her husband by her side, they followed the location through the maze of alleyways in Venice. A short time later, they found themselves at the front of the same group of teenage girls.
The Hair-Pull Heard Around TikTok
Instead of freezing up, mom went full-on superhero mode. She dove at one of the girls, got a fistfull of hair, and wouldn’t let go. Witnesses say she held on for almost fifty minutes while the girl kicked, screamed, and rolled around trying to get away. The crowd? They were cheering her on. Apparently Venetians had had enough of these pickpocket gangs.
Things Turn Violent
When the police finally arrived, the madness wasn’t over. One of the suspects hit mom in the face with a bag containing a tumbler that weighed a few pounds and caused mom to gash her face and leave her with a nasty black eye. Even then she wouldn’t give up until the girls were in handcuffs.
The Sequel
Two of the robbers were arrested immediately. liaison office, and disappeared. According to Italian media, the 14-year-old girl who got arrested and received a hair-pull was released on bail two days later.
Why it Blows Up Online
Karis McElroy, the couple’s daughter, documented the incident on TikTok, and the video spiraled out of control. For the locals, it was validation. For tourists, it was a warning: keep your things close because Venice is not only about romance, but also about keeping your eyes on the bag in front of you.
