A quirky new hotel has popped up in Brno, Czech Republic. It’s got quite the backstory, once serving as a communist-era bunker.
As per the Daily Star, dated Thursday (25/4/2024), the Czech Republic boasts the Špilberk Castle, dating back to the 13th century. And right underneath it lies the 10-Z Bunker, a dark, metal-clad hideout. Now, it’s been transformed into a place to crash.
Right smack dab in the middle of Brno, the second-largest city in Czechia after Prague, visitors can enjoy free guided tours from history buffs about the bunker from Tuesday to Sunday. But if you’re an English speaker, best book your spot ahead of time.
Thinking of booking a stay? You’ll be bunking down in an underground shelter. Every room’s decked out in a style that screams Communist era in Czechia, circa 1948 to 1989.
Inside, you’ll find bunk beds or old-school twin beds, vintage phones, and props like communist hats and gas masks strewn about. The retro vibes continue with old posters, 1960s TVs, and all sorts of other knick-knacks in the rooms and corridors.
But don’t worry, despite the throwback look, there’s free Wi-Fi all over the place. And you won’t go hungry either, thanks to breakfast served up every morning by a chef.
And the price? Pretty reasonable. It’s £48 for a twin or double room, and £35 for a single.
Got a family in tow? Family rooms are up for grabs too, at £75 per night for four folks, and £119 for seven.
This bunker’s just a stone’s throw away from attractions like Freedom Square, the Old Town Hall, the Capuchin Crypt, and the botanical garden.
“Just a heads up, ’cause of how this place is set up, it’s not the best idea for folks who get antsy in tight spaces, or those with breathing or allergy issues. It’s a cool 14 degrees down there, and we’ve got heaters in the rooms,” the hotel warns.
But if none of that’s an issue for you, a stay here could be pretty darn interesting. After all, it’s steeped in history.
“Gotta say, staying here’s a trip. The staff’s super friendly, and I had a blast checking out the museum and getting the guided tour of the bunker. The setup’s basic, but that’s all part of the charm. And the location? Can’t beat it. Plus, didn’t even miss having windows (though fair warning, the vents can get pretty loud, so bring some earplugs),” one guest shared.
“I only stayed the one night, but wouldn’t mind checking out the museum,” another guest commented.
“Definitely a unique and fascinating experience. This place is the real deal, no pretending. It’s not some hotel dressed up as a bunker; it’s the genuine article. So yeah, it’s got that bunker feel. If you’re after something different and authentic, book it. But if you’re after a cushy hotel experience, this ain’t it,” another guest reviewed.
