Two Indonesian villages have been honored as part of the World’s Best Tourism Villages 2024 by UN Tourism.
The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) officially announced its list of the World’s Best Tourism Villages 2024 on Friday, November 15, 2024. Among the 55 recognized destinations, two exceptional villages from Indonesia made the list: Jatiluwih in Bali and Wukirsari in the Special Region of Yogyakarta.
According to the official website of UN Tourism, the selection process evaluated 260 applications submitted by more than 60 member countries. Following a rigorous screening process, 55 villages were selected for the prestigious recognition, showcasing their excellence in sustainable tourism development.
Tourism as a Driver of Empowerment and Sustainability
Tourism plays a pivotal role in empowering rural communities by preserving and valuing their rich cultural heritage while fostering sustainable development.
Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General of UNWTO, highlighted that the recognized villages are prime examples of how tourism can serve as a powerful tool for transformation. By leveraging their unique assets—be it natural or cultural—these villages have successfully translated their heritage into economic growth, improved living standards, and enhanced community well-being.
