The buzz of Labuan Bajo did not dissipate with the cancellation of all tourist boats. Instead, it brought new energy as the area continued to be packed with visitors.
The Land Says Come In When The Sea Says No
Unseasonable weather in Labuan Bajo occurred just after two boat accidents happened in the area. As a result of safety reasons, all tourist boats were temporarily banned from sailing starting on December 26, 2025, and continuing through January 1, 2026. Poor ocean conditions included high surf, unusual ocean currents, and local authorities’ advisories against ocean activities.
However, in a crazy twist of fate, the number of tourists dropped substantially but did not leave. Visitors returned to the mainland, where they participated in all types of non-boat activities.
Travelers were active on the streets in Labuan Bajo, walking, spending time in coffee shops, attending cultural gatherings, and interacting with locals at traditional weaving communities. Tourists from abroad met tourists from the destinations, indicating that Labuan Bajo does have a stable tourism base and beyond, based solely on the sea.
Labuan Bajo’s Abundant Possibilities Go Beyond The Sea
Labuan Bajo is not only known for its ocean crossing; it has many other attractions and activities within Labuan Bajo and surrounding area.
There are many beautiful views and culture throughout Labuan Bajo, and you don’t have to get on a boat to enjoy Labuan Bajo.
Labuan Bajo remains active, although no boats will be operating.
The Indonesian Government has a number one priority when it comes to travel: your safety is paramount. The temporary boat shutdown was initiated after warnings from the Government about possible severe weather and to ensure the safety of all visitors.
Tourism officials warned that all tourist boats operating in violation of the sailing ban would be subject to considerable penalties and that there would be no exceptions or shortcuts granted.
While the weather may have discouraged some visitors, it also provided an opportunity for Labuan Bajo to showcase itself as a multi-activity destination as opposed to primarily being a sea tour destination.
Historically, Labuan Bajo has been associated with its marine and outer island adventures, but recent circumstances provided an opportunity for Labuan Bajo to demonstrate that tourists can continue to explore and enjoy the mainland attractions even if they’re not able to access the islands by boat. Tourists were observed continuing to visit Labuan Bajo in a calm, safe, and responsible manner.
