Weather Forecast App Offers Hotel Compensation for Rainy Days

Unexpected weather often throws a wrench into travel plans. That’s why this weather forecast app promises to compensate users if its predictions miss the mark.

In the past, a hotel in Singapore, InterContinental Singapore, used to give money back to guests if it rained during their stay. Now, you can get a similar deal by using WeatherPromise, a weather prediction app.

According to a report from the New York Post on Monday (4/1/2024), here’s how it works: When you book a vacation through WeatherPromise for somewhere like Phuket, the app will use its tech to predict how much rain to expect during your trip. If they get it wrong, they’ll cover your entire hotel bill.

Dan Price, one of the folks behind WeatherPromise, says their product aims to ensure people get the travel experience they’re hoping for.

Think of it like insurance, but with a fresh twist, suggests Professor Chekitan S. Dev from Cornell’s SC Johnson School of Business, calling the idea brilliant.

“Dealing with weather is still a headache in the hotel industry,” Dev remarks.

While savvy hotel managers often offer perks to make guests feel better, heavy rain can still put a damper on your vacation.

However, meteorologist Michael A. Favetta isn’t entirely sold on the idea.

“From my experience, weather changes too fast to predict accurately more than a few days ahead,” he points out.

But WeatherPromise claims to gather data from 2.3 million locations worldwide every hour to make its forecasts. That might just give it the edge it needs.

So, what if they goof up? Well, if the forecast falls short, travelers will receive an apology along with instructions on how to get their money back pronto.

“We’re keeping an eye on the weather while you’re on the move,” Price reassures.

Getting your refund is easiest if you book through one of the app’s travel partners, though they’re still few and far between. But fear not, you can also buy WeatherPromise directly and file for reimbursement.

And what about snow? WeatherPromise is on it, gathering data on heatwaves and winds, which are crucial for activities like sailing, surfing, and beach lounging.
