Seoul Parks Get a Futuristic Crime Fighter: Meet the Hologram Cop

Before we get to the “sci-fi movie” part—here’s the stat that counts: crime in Jodong No. 3 Park decreased by a statistically significant 22% when a glowing hologram officer was patrolling. That’s solid performance for a cop who can’t even chase anybody down.

The Weird but Cool Reality

Let’s put this in perspective: you’re taking a late evening stroll through downtown Seoul around 8 PM, and suddenly a life-sized blue hologram appears with full police uniform, every couple of minutes, announcing to you with a pre-recorded message that there are cameras watching and real cops waiting in case something happens. It’s like Blade Runner by way of neighborhood watch, right?

Why They Did It

The hologram cop is not just a cool trick. Seoul is experimenting with ways to make public spaces safer—especially places prone to rowdy drinking or incidents of violence. This is part of the “Safe Park” initiative and this tech is their newest tool.

Who’s Pulling Strings?

The digital officer, at approximately 1.70 meters tall, is decked out in the official Seoul Metropolitan Police uniform, developed by local tech company Hologrammics, which has been up and running since October. Although it cannot arrest people or break up fights, the psychological effect of its presence — people are reluctant to do anything suspect when there is a glowing cop nearby watching — is immense.

The Next Steps

While there may not be plans for a hologram police force quite yet, Jungbu Police Chief Ahn Dong-hyun says the success of this pilot project may lead to more hologram officers around parks and public locations in Seoul. Next time you’re out they (the hologram) may just be your walking buddy, in the form of blue light, keeping threats away.
