Do you remember when you used to visit a certain place, only to find out that it just doesn’t feel the same anymore? Once the zenith destination for beach relaxation, spicy Thai cooking, and relaxed atmosphere, the city has unfortunately changed… and not for the better, according to regulars.
“It’s Not About Thailand Changing Alone…”
Long time visitors complain that it is not only marked shifts to Pattaya that they have had to experience, social norms and lifestyle etiquette have equally changed on a global scale.
As one tourist put it: “There used to be people who appreciated silence and peace along with good behavior. Nowadays, it seems like everyone is rushing to be more rude and selfish.” Yes, this is an extreme viewpoint, but not an unreasonable one, especially considering how behavior has evolved off-late.
The Pattaya They Knew? Gone.
There was a time (read: 1950-1990) when Pattaya earned a reputation for being a serene and tranquil resort and, while it was not very cheap, it certainly was a luxurious getaway for people looking to soak in the rich culture and retire by the seaside. Backpacks-full-of-nature enthusisasts strolled over the streets actively battered with warmed locals.
Fast forward to now? Some say a viral shopping center is a better description than a cultural hot spot. Instagram influencers and discount airfare have brought in a different sort of traffic. And that’s good and bad.
What The Regulars Are Saying
A 25-year Thailand veteran tells us, “Pattaya used to feel special – now it’s all fast cash and party vibes. Not the serene place I loved.” Oof.
One witness added, half-joking, “It’s like the rowdy types who used to go to Spain for cheap beer and bar fights have discovered Thailand.” The laughter masks the truth.
Changes Are Acceptable When It Comes to the Locals
It’s not just the tourists, though. Expats and frequent flyers are keen to point out shifts in the rest of the world’s people’s attitudes, too. Someone shared, “Thais used to be very welcoming. Now, they’re figuring out their own worth. Can’t really blame them.” Fair enough.
The friendliness that used to characterize the tourist-local relationship has turned into something more transactional. Because the marketplace is so saturated, monetizing every aspect is crucial.
So Where Are They Exploring Instead?
Vietnam and Cambodia are emerging in conversations regarding travel. Less known, less expensive, and possessing the same sense of wonder that Pattaya used to have. To my utter surprise, a portion of people have decided to “opt out” altogether—choosing to stay home rather than travel and seek something that no longer exists.
What Are Your Final Thoughts? Ironic.
No one needs to be blamed or targeted for issues. Ultimately, for a large segment of Europeans who frequented Pattaya, it’s safe to say that it’s not as beautiful as it used to be.
In some cases, it is not the place that changes; it is the people. Or… maybe it’s both.
