The relentless heatwave scorching Greece has claimed another victim. An unlucky tourist has met a tragic end thanks to the blistering temperatures.

According to Greek Reporter on Tuesday (23/7/2024), the unfortunate tourist was a 66-year-old woman from England, enjoying her vacation at Achladies Beach, a holiday resort in Greece.

While she was enjoying a swim, the woman reportedly lost consciousness. A vigilant lifeguard patrolling the beach found her unresponsive.

Despite immediate CPR and a quick dash to Skiathos Medical Center, which is only a seven-minute drive from the beach, the medical team couldn’t save her. Local media reported that her body has been transported to the coastal city of Volos for an autopsy.

A spokesperson for the Foreign Office confirmed they are providing consular support to the friend of the British woman who passed away in Greece.

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service had issued excessive heat warnings due to the soaring temperatures over the past few days, urging tourists to take precautions after several heat-related deaths.

Greece is once again baking under an extended heatwave, with temperatures in many areas exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. A gradual drop in temperature is expected to begin on Tuesday.

Earlier in July, a 20-year-old South African man was found dead by the Coast Guard near the island of Kefalonia in Greece. Benjamin Bezuidenhout had gone missing after he ventured into the sea for a freedive north of the Sami resort.

In early July, another British tourist died in the sea near a shipwreck in Greece. Witnesses reported that the 33-year-old man was seen struggling in the choppy waters around the Epanomi Shipwreck near the northern city of Thessaloniki.
