China is developing tourist villages to attract more visitors, offering tranquil atmospheres and unique local experiences that are hard to resist.

Even though the summer holiday season has ended, bed-and-breakfast (B&B) accommodations in Mogan Mountain, Zhejiang Province, China, remain packed with visitors.

According to Xinhua (Friday, 4th October 2024), She Jiangrong, the Vice Chairman of the Moganshan B&B Industry Association, shared that tourists are still visiting even after the peak holiday season has passed.

Located in the Deqing area of Mogan Mountain, this region has become a sought-after summer resort, home to more than 800 B&Bs, many of which are run by locals.

The area’s scenic beauty and peaceful atmosphere are major draws for tourists. That’s why a group of screenwriters came after the summer holiday rush — to find inspiration.

Xu Langyue, a local villager who has been running a B&B since 2019, shared the rates for her accommodation.

“Our room rates range from 980 yuan (about $140) to 2,280 yuan (around $320),” Xu said.

Across China, the expanding tourism industry has significantly boosted rural economies by attracting both domestic and international visitors.

In Dazhai Village, located in the southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, tourists flock to experience the local culture and admire the area’s famous rice terraces.

Dazhai Village, which was recognized as one of the Best Tourism Villages by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in 2022, welcomed 708,000 visitors in 2023. The collective income from tourism generated 7.25 million yuan for the village that year.

For example, in Yujiang District, Yingtan City, located in eastern Jiangxi Province, workers are busy preparing ornamental fish for distribution across China.

“These fish will be shipped nationwide after being ordered through e-commerce,” said Chen Cuiyun, head of an aquaculture company.

The ornamental fish farming sector in Yujiang has seen significant growth in recent months.

Now, nearly 50 households are involved in this industry, which is expected to generate over 100 million yuan in value this year.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China, significant progress has been made in both agricultural product processing and rural tourism.

To date, around 1,953 scenic villages have been developed, and 139 industry clusters have each generated more than 10 billion yuan in output value.

This approach is similar to initiatives in Indonesia, where tourist villages are also used to attract visitors.
