A 58-year-old British tourist was arrested by Turkish law enforcement officials after it is said that he spat at the Turkish flag which is displayed in a hotel lobby in Alanya, a famous beach resort city located around 130 km to the east of Antalya, Turkey.
As it is said, the incident had begun with some disagreement between the tourist and the personnel working at the hotel. During this confrontation, it is said that the man had allegedly turned to the Turkish flag hanging in the hotel’s lobby and spat on it. After that, the hotel staff notified the police about the incident. Consequently, the tourist was arrested by the police and taken to the Alanya Courthouse which would entertain the matter.
After this court hearing, the British citizen was charged by the prosecutor’s office with the crime of defamation of the national symbol. He was subsequently taken to a prison outside the city of Alanya awaiting the completion of legal proceedings.
The case has generated considerable interest as Turkey has very stringent regulations on violation of the country’s national symbols.
The rule is not limited to Turks only. Foreigners violating the law while on Turkish soil will also face consequences. Until the time of publication, no statement has been released from the British Embassy on the subject of the detention.

The case serves as a reminder to travelers of the necessity to familiarize themselves with local laws when traveling to another country. What might be perceived as a frivolous act elsewhere may have serious legal ramifications when taking place in a country where laws specifically deal with national symbols.
