A troubling incident on an American Airlines flight has generated significant buzz after it was revealed that a passenger was taped up and bound to his seat due to his confrontational behavior.
The incident happened on a flight from Dallas to Newark on September 3, 2026. The FBI later revealed the passenger’s name as Arthur Lundeen, a 67-year-old from Arizona.
Eyewitnesses said that Lundeen appeared to be drunk while on the flight. After some time, a member of the flight crew intervened to calm him down. At this point, Lundeen had already started using profanities, including slurs and insults directed toward both the passengers onboard and the flight crew.
One of the witnesses, former police officer Juan Mejia, stated that the whole quarrel started when the plane was nearly three-quarters of the way into its journey.
Mejia claims the individual in question made uncomplimentary remarks directed at the staff of American Airlines and fellow travelers. Some of the comments were said to be of a racist nature as well as deeply derogatory toward women.
Mejia and his associate, Richard Olenick, observed the circumstances as they unfolded. The two men intervened after concluding that Lundeen had started to physically touch other people present on the plane.
Olenick stated that Mejia saw the need for action at once. He was seated right next to Lundeen in an attempt to restrain him with the sole purpose of stopping the situation from escalating any further.
Both passengers made it clear that they had no intention of harming Lundeen, emphasizing that their plan was only to confine him and keep him under control until law enforcement would be able to arrive.
Later on, it was reported by the Maryland Transportation Authority Police that Lundeen was taped to his seat, and his hands were tied with zip ties. According to the account of these two passengers, they stayed with Lundeen until law enforcers arrived at the airplane.
At around 10:15 at night, the flight was redirected to Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI). After the occurrence, Lundeen was taken off the plane and the flight proceeded towards Newark afterward.
American Airlines verified the disturbance and assured that safety and security of travelers and employees are always its number one priority. Moreover, the carrier stated that it has a zero-tolerance policy against any kind of violence on board.
Although the full information regarding the incident is not publicly available, Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Aviation Administration are both investigating the situation.
