A female passenger allegedly wept for about three hours on an airplane for a journey of 10 hours because her co-passenger did not agree to exchange seats, which would allow her to travel with her husband.
The report was made by travel influencer Harvey. He happened to be on the same flight. He narrated that the woman requested him to give up his aisle seat so she could sit next to her husband. He refused to do so as it would entail moving to an inconvenient middle seat.
The woman was seen crying during the course of the journey exclaiming to Harvey how much she missed her husband and how she wanted to put her head on his shoulder.
One thing that made the event particularly interesting is the fact that her husband was seated just two rows ahead of her in a middle seat. During the entire flight, his husband was wearing earphones and sleeping.
“I ultimately wondered whether something bad happened like a death, as how can anyone cry for three hours?” Harvey posted on Instagram.
The lady explained to Harvey that nobody died; she simply missed her husband.
Passenger’s Reaction Triggers Online Discussion
Harvey was on his way home from Istanbul to Washington, D.C. Apparently upon landing he made a mocking comment to the lady, “Congratulations for surviving 10 hours without your husband.”
His post became a sensation and was shared by more than ninety thousand people, triggering discussions on social media about the etiquette of seat exchanging on airplanes.
Many netizens supported Harvey in deciding not to change his seat explaining that passengers cannot be forced to give up their decent seats.
One of the users commented, “Can’t spend 10 hours without her husband and at the same time won’t pay for sitting together.”
Some people made jokes claiming that the husband would be happy having the chance to sleep without his wife near him while traveling.
Nevertheless many users remarked that Harvey could have been more polite and agree to change seats. Nevertheless people agreed that the seat exchange is a matter of choice.
Should Couples Arrange Their Seats Ahead of Time?
This incident brought forth various concerns surrounding the issue of requesting the passengers to change their seats on the plane.
Harvey tapped into the matter of why people tend to believe that it’s OK to expect that a particular passenger will move and give up the seat exclusively for the sake of someone wanting to go and sit next to a partner.
He believes that if the couple wishes to sit together, they should have booked the seats next to each other when they purchased the tickets instead of expecting others to change places at the last moment.
The anecdote serves as a good example of how common it is for travelers to encounter a conflict between their wishes and wishes of fellow passengers. While it might be true that some passengers are willing to give up their seats to be able to help another passenger, in many cases it would not be possible because of some good reasons.
In other words, at some point people will have to understand that their expectations might not be fulfilled either.
