Migingo is a small island located in the central region of Lake Victoria and has unique population density. It’s considered to be one of the rare humanly occupied places in East Africa.
The island has an area of only about 2,000 square meters (less than half the football field) yet, according to estimates, houses over 500 people. What is more shocking is the fact that this tiny island has several businesses and other forms of entertainment while being limited in space.
Located within the waters that separate Kenya and Uganda, Migingo is notable for not only its unusual population density. The waters surrounding this island are rich in fish including Nile Perch which is of great economic value. This natural resource has turned this tiny island into a significant center for fishing and trading while creating the point of dispute between the countries.
How Migingo Became a Crowded Island?
Migingo was not always a large settlement. In the past, it was just a small rocky piece of land.
As per Emmanuel Kisiangani, a senior researcher at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), Migingo was considered an uninhabited island conceivably until the early 1990s when a decrease of water levels in Lake Victoria marked the beginning of the metamorphosis of the area into a bustling fishing community.
When the rocky areas started getting exposed, fishermen began to recognize the site as an interesting fishing ground because the waters surrounding the area were abundant in fish, making the location more valuable than its land.
After some time, fishermen started living on the island, and Migingo started becoming a thriving fishing community where people have settled.
At the moment, almost the totality of the land consists of simple constructions with many built of corrugated iron. There are several houses, shops, bars, and pharmacies.
Despite being a tiny island, Migingo boasts of several entertainment centers, including a casino, and there are up to 200 boats operating from the place.
What Is Life on Migingo Island?
Life on Migingo is not pleasant or easy.
The small size of the island means that people live in very close proximity. The houses are built so that there is little space for movement between them.
There are issues with infrastructure as well. It is reported that there is no organized sewage system, or running water on the island as well as no hospital or internet access.
Nevertheless, people choose to never leave.
This is due to the fishing activities that occur in the waters surrounding Migingo. The island is not just a place to live; it is also a hub of economic activity for fishers who rely on Lake Victoria.
Living on a tiny island is quite tough, but at the same time, it is a source of income for many fishermen.
Migingo Island is known for its Nile perch waters, which are of high commercial value. The fish populations of certain lakes of Lake Victoria have declined due to overfishing and water hyacinth, but the depths around Migingo remained a fishing area.
The importance of Nile perch has allowed the island’s economy to keep growing.
Due to the high commercial value of Nile perch, the industry around Migingo has become a major source of income. The data mentioned in the original text indicate that the exports of the industry are estimated to be in millions of pounds; according to reports, the average catch from the Migingo region is about £6,000 (approximately Rp. 144 million based on figures given in the original document).
This is why so many people are attracted by the island despite the unfavorable living conditions.
For fishermen, Migingo offers what its tiny size does not: proximity to fishing locations.
Migingo Is More Than a Common Island.
There are all sorts of places like food shops, grocery outlets, pubs, beauty salons, chemists, and different businesses working to help the fishermen. The boats linking the island to fishing areas and the mainlands are always in action.
Migingo has an amazing density as there are more than 500 people living within about 2000 square meters.
The economy of Migingo is mainly dependent on fishing, which is why the daily routine is closely connected with Lake Victoria. Fishermen go to fish, boats deliver the catch, and the fish is taken to the fish market.
In this regard, Migingo cannot be called just a small island with many inhabitants. It has turned into a small economic zone that is based on the use of the lake’s resources.
Why Do Kenya and Uganda Have Conflicts on Migingo?
The economic significance of the island makes it politically troublesome.
The disagreement gained notoriety in 2004 and transformed into a diplomatic conflict. Kenya insists that Migingo is within its territory based on the boundaries set in the year 1926 during the colonial era.
At the same time, Uganda has ascertained the establishment of its jurisdiction over Migingo at various moments in time.
Attempts to resolve the problem jointly have encountered big obstacles. One of the key problems is the differing interpretation of old maps and documents that set the boundaries during the colonial times.
Research into the issue shows that colonial maps are ambiguous, and hence, they cannot serve as the only foundation of the border in the modern setting.
“The Smallest War in Africa”
Due to struggles over such a small piece of land, Migingo is sometimes being called “the smallest war”.
The name reflects the disproportionate amount of attention attracted by the conflict compared to the tiny size of the island.
Previously, Uganda had their guards in the area while fishermen from Kenya complained about arrests and actions performed by Ugandan authorities.
The conflict not only refers to the territory but also includes the access to fishing areas around Migingo and control over financial activities conducted there.
Subsequent to this, both states made attempts to co-operate in order to tackle security-related and fishing-related issues to the extent that conflicts would not arise.
An Attempt to Alleviate Conflict around Migingo
Kenya and Uganda have made different attempts to deal with similarities connected with Migingo.
In 2009, both nations created a mutual mechanism of dealing with issues connected with the island and its waters, however, disputes related to territorial borders and access to fishing resources remained.
More recently, in 2025, two countries took steps toward co-operation through a joint fishing license partnership.
This concept of co-operation is merely a reflection of the real situation of Migingo, and regardless of the situation with geographical boundaries not being clarified yet, fishermen living in the region have to rely on the same lake.
Thus, they can find common grounds of co-operation concerning fishing.
Little Island, Great Significance
Migingo may be the smallest inhabited island of Lake Victoria, however, it is much more valuable than its sizes show.
With an approximate area of around 2,000 square meters and more than 500 people reported to be living there, the island is a perfect case of how economic opportunities can change such a tiny rocky island into an active land.
Its crowded construction and fishing boats tell one side of the story, while the story below the water looks slightly different, because there are plenty of fish stocks, which attract fishermen and create good economy.
But at the same time, Migingo’s location put it in the center of complicated relations of Kenya and Uganda. What looks like a small island in the middle of Lake Victoria brings a lot of disputes about borders, fishing rights, economy and cooperation.
In the end, it becomes clear that the size is not always a determinant for such important cases. A piece of land smaller than half of a football field can easily become a place of habitation for thousands of people, while it can also bring troubles for the two neighbouring countries.
