The pedestrian path along Kuta Beach has been a ticking time bomb for months. The waves kept slamming against the concrete slabs, and the constant pounding was shifting the slabs, making the path uneven and unsafe to use. Locals had put up warning signs, though it seems tourists don’t see these things until it’s too late.

“Last year it broke, it was fixed and then the tide crashed again. We have informed the Badung Regency officials, and now we are still waiting for repair,” he said.

A Jog to ER

On September 3rd at approximately 4:30 PM local time, a foreign tourist jogging along the famous Kuta walkway took a very nasty fall. Videos that subsequently went viral showed the man sitting on the ground gripping his leg and onlookers surrounding him where he looked pale and contorting his face in pain, but after looking closely at the, they all seemed to think the injury was a major injury possibly fracturing or breaking his lower leg.

Onlookers carried him to get medical help and he was taken directly to the hospital. The clip quickly went viral online and garnered backlash about how long the damaged path had been neglected.

Community Has Already Highlighted The Issue

The local authority, Bendesa Adat Kuta, explained they had already raised the issue with the Department of Public Works. “We don’t want this to impact Bali’s image. I was informed that the site would be inspected the next day,” one official hinted that things might be finally happening but many felt it was long overdue.

The Larger Context

If people keep getting harmed from deteriorating infrastructure, it does not just impact the image—it affects the trust of tourists who regularly contribute to one of Indonesia’s largest tourism draws.
