Madrid is joining other major cities around the world in banning electric scooter rentals. The reason? Operators failed to meet the necessary requirements.

According to CNN on Sunday (October 6, 2024), Madrid’s Mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, made the announcement in early September. The city council later issued a statement explaining that the three companies failed to meet the required conditions for their licenses.

The council claimed that the companies hindered their efforts to inspect operations by not providing the necessary information or access to their companies.

Despite these obstacles, the council said it was able to verify that the companies did not comply with the permit requirements.

Lime, Dott, and Tier were the selected companies authorized to offer electric scooter rentals in Madrid, with each company permitted to operate 2,000 scooters.

This decision means rented e-scooters will disappear from the city starting this October. Once the revocation process begins, the companies have 20 days to appeal the decision.

A spokesperson from Dott confirmed that the company had received official notice from Madrid City Hall.

In August, officials in Melbourne, Australia, decided to ban e-scooter rentals due to safety concerns after receiving hundreds of complaints and accident reports.

Back in April 2023, residents of Paris voted to ban e-scooter rentals in the French capital, with the ban taking effect at the end of August when the operators’ contracts expired.
