Flying can be a stressful event for some and can even morph into a complete nightmare for others, as one mother traveling with her disabled son has firsthand experience of. United Airlines is now under fire after a traveler posted her experience and is now facing backlash online.
A Flight Experience—To Never Relive
Sotomayor Melissa took to TikTok to air her grievances for the flight from Tampa to New Jersey. She was accompanied by her son, who due to present medical conditions, depends on a tracheostomy as well as a ventilator.
“He is every bit as alive as the equipment keeping him alive. He has impaired vision and hearing,” she said.
She had all the necessary medical documents ready, and faced no issues during their flight to Florida. But the return journey was a different kettle of fish altogether.
The Dispute Begins
A flight attendant approached her and told her that she needed to remove her son’s ventilator and portable oxygen concentrator as the devices needed to be secured for takeoff and would not fit in the overhead compartment.
Sotomayor was understandably confused and alarmed, but she kept her cool. Problem was, explaining to the attendant that her son’s equipment was literally life-supporting made no difference. Instead of reassessing and attempting to understand the situation, the crew persisted with unfriendly demands enquiring for her documents.
Things reached a new level of absurdity when, not one, but two more flight attendants joined in the middle of the debate, and even the captain had to intervene, all of them backed by their mandate that the equipment needed to be stored away.
Sotomayor tried her best to negotiate with them, explaining that her son had the same configuration on the previous flight with no trouble at all. But the stubbornness of the crew was unprecedented.
One of the United staff members is reported to have said, “He’ll be fine until we reach cruising altitude.”
Sotomayor Receives Backlash
This argument went on for almost an hour. Other passengers seemed to not mind Soto, but were clearly annoyed with the airline crew.
There was even a moment when she was threatened with a seat change for not complying with their unreasonable demands.
In the end, the captain claimed that they had clearance for takeoff and the saga came to a close, but at what cost?
As she stated in her viral TikTok video, “I felt totally insulted, utterly disrespected, and humiliated in front of a whole airplane full of people.”
United Airlines Replies
Sotomayor contacted United Airlines corporate directly, but just like the customer representatives, the corporation had no answer for her. The United Airlines airline told her that they are not at fault and simply dismissed her grievances.
At the same time, her video was causing controversy as many people were angry. Supporters of her video filled the comments section, many encouraging her to sue the airline.
This case has forced discussions once again about the way airline companies manage their passengers with disabilities and whether or not there should be more comprehensive policies regarding the training of airline personnel in dealing with specifically disabled travelers.
What’s the United Airlines answer to that? Probably a lot.
