Think of a remote island that was once home to hundreds of thousands of penguins, called Zavodovski Island, in the South Atlantic Ocean, which was once noted to be the site of the largest penguin colony in the world.
Research published recently, however, demonstrates that the populations of the extraordinary wildlife species have fallen drastically, raising the alarm about climate change’s impact on penguins and their food.
According to the research by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), the number of chinstrap penguin nests on Zavodovski Island decreased by 63% in the year 2025, as compared to the previous year 2011. The recent research showed that the island lost its place as the largest penguin colony in the world.
Climate Change May Have an Effect on Penguin Population
It is believed that the changes in the oceans’ conditions due to climate change are one of the major reasons for decreased chinstrap penguin populations.
Chinstrap penguins have preferences in their diet and enjoy colder water. One of their preferred food sources is krill, small marine organisms that are important for the entire food.
The increasing water temperature in the ocean, has resulted in moving krill populations further south.
The combination of dwindling food supply and lack of breeding sites is making the species susceptible.
Professor Norman Ratcliffe, the head of the research at BAS, shed light on the feeding behavior and preference of the penguins for cooler water, confirming the species’ declining numbers.
Whereas the krill are migrating further south, the chinstrap penguins are unable to follow their meal due to presence of lesser sea ice in the southern regions and unavailability of adequate nesting sites.
What Contributes to the Growth of Macaroni Penguins?
Surprisingly, another interesting point that came forward was that macaroni penguins exhibited opposite trends; their population has increased while chinstrap penguins have declined.
This difference indicates that environmental changes exert distinct effects on different species.
An island far away with a role in the world
Zavodovski is situated far away from many human settlements thus making it not a common travel destination; a major reason for its significance is related to its endemic species, which make it a valuable breeding area for its population of penguins.
One example of the impact of environmental changes on the ecosystems is the decrease in chinstrap penguin nests, which illustrates the influence of different factors even on an isolated island.
Although the impact causing the decline of population is not specified yet, the results show the value of the monitoring process of the colonies of penguins in the context of rising temperatures and changing food sources in the oceans.
Zavodovski is a valuable case from the perspective of polar scientists who investigate how oceanic conditions can affect the location of penguin populations living in Antarctica.
