It’s no secret that travel clothes need to be comfy, that’s why so many people put on their favorite pair of leggings when getting on a flight. But here’s the twist: leggings may actually not be the healthiest choice for your flight. Believe it or not, there is a legitimate safety issue that most people would never think of.
Why Should You Skip Leggings on a Plane
If mid-air something does go wrong, like a crash landing or cabin fire, leggings can become the biggest problem imaginable. Put simply, those stretchy synthetic materials can be a danger waiting to happen.
Christine Negroni, an aviation expert, and author, says that leggings can be problematic because they are made out of materials that can catch fire and in some extreme cases melt onto your skin. She goes on to explain how we’d be better off in cotton or natural blends.
“You might have to escape through flames or there could be a fire waiting on the ground underneath once you exit the plane,” she told The Sun. “Most people wear yoga pants on flights now ,and those materials ignite incredibly quick while rubbing on your skin. Personally, I won’t touch those pants.”
Shoes Stay On Too!
In addition to clothing, Christine says that the case is the same with foot wear. She does recommend keeping shoes on for taking off and landing.
“If the ground are on fire, covered in fuel, or even cold,” So “you don’t want to be on that without shoes”.
Because of her explanations, sneakers are a better choice than high heels or open toed shoes.
Other Avoidable clothing for Flights.
- Skinny Jeans
They may fit, but as with all tight attire, skinny jeans can be a pain for long hauls.
- Restricts Free Movement
- Changing cabin pressure causes bloating or escalates already tight clothing.
- According to experts, increased risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (blood clots in the legs) occurs when one is confined to skinny jeans for long hours.
Go for relaxing jeans or joggers with an elastic waist. Trust me, your abdomen (or your blood pressure) will love you!
- Shorts
TikTok Guru Tommy’s other wisdom suggests, steer clear of shorts when flying. Why? Because airplane seating corresponds with airplane hygiene standards. Long pants seal your skin off the seat and any infections hiding on it.
“He points out, ‘you can never know how well the seats have been cleaned,’” followed by, “putting on long pants helps lower the chances of getting skin infections or irritations stemming from exposure.”
What Can We Learn? Be Smart When Picking Flights.
As you’re selecting an airport getup, remember these things for your next outfit:
- When choosing apparel, go for leggings as a last option. Always aim for natural materials, like cotton.
- Pick apparel that is free from tightness around the stomach in order to limit any form of bloating and circulation problems.
- Choose sneakers rather than high slips or sandals.
- Use longer pants to cover skin infections from the bacteria filled seats.
Choosing outfits that you want to travel in should not add any stress to the experience of flying.
