For over seventy years, the vanishing of Pan American Airways Flight 526A was a hard nut to crack for Puerto Rico’s aviation field. The sonars of very high resolution and unmanned underwater vehicles made it possible for the search team to identify the wreck of the Douglas DC-4 plane lying at the seabed. The plane was split into two major pieces but was identifiable enough to be recognized.

The Flight That Could Never Make it to New York

Pan American Airways Flight 526A, which was flown by the Douglas DC-4 called Clipper Endeavor, took off from Isla Grande Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico on April 11, 1952.

Although its goal was to get to New York City, just a short time after taking off, problems started to arise, ultimately leading to a crash.

There were 64 passengers on board and five crew members, but although the impact was serious, rescue operations managed to save the passengers from the water.

The discovery has finally provided important answers about the past.

The expedition was undertaken by the Air/Sea Heritage Foundation, in cooperation with several partners, which included marine mapping firm Deep Sea Vision and the Discovery Channel’s Expedition Unknown.

The president of Air/Sea Heritage Foundation Russ Matthews called the event very exciting and at the same time emotionally moving. The excitement of finding the flight was tempered with sadness about the losses that remained unaccounted for so many years.

A catastrophe that altered aviation
