Tomfoolery at Changi Airport? Probably not a great idea! Nine foreigners just learned this the hard way after being caught for running an illegal middleman scheme at the airport.
Smuggling Gone Too Far: Caught Red-Handed
According to The Straits Times (March 31, 2025), a group of nine people (all in their 30s and 40s) had been soliciting fellow passengers from their native countries, trying to assist them with transporting gold and smartphones as souvenirs. The kicker? These tourists were promised cash rewards in exchange for carrying the goods and delivering them after reaching the destination.
Needless to say, this operation raised suspicion which later was verified by the authorities. After a joint crackdown on March 22, Singapore police force, Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA), Ministry of Manpower (MOM), and Changi Airport Group commenced an investigation.
Disgraceful Deports and Permanently Blacklisted
The gender and nationality of the nine people is unknown for now, what is obvious is that Singapore does not shame these activities.
- Eight people had their work permits (S Pass) revoked by MOM.
- One individual had his short-term visit pass cancelled by ICA.
After these events, these 9 people were removed from the country and are now prohibited from entering Changi Airport without an active plane ticket.
Significant Outcomes for Airport Fraudsters
The singaporean Civil Aviation Authority has an extreme view concerning unauthorized marketing at the aiport. People who are found to provide illegal services at Changi are liable to receive a Prohibition Order which bars them access to the airport for an given amount of time. If they choose to not follow the order? Arrest and criminal charges wait for them.
A single traveler also received a reminder that, in a more direct form, actions are forbidden – to carry things for unfamiliar people.
Looks like a supervised small task can indeed be tricky, which can lead you to face a range of dangers from security issues to criminal accusations. In a nutshell – not worth the panic!
