Bhutan is set for an auspicious spiritual event on November 1, 2026, as it is going to build 108 holy Jangchub Chorten or stupas of enlightenment at the same time in the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), the southern part of the country.
This is known as Project 108, which was initiated by the King of Bhutan and will unite thousands of local people and participants from all over the world in a national offering that promotes global prosperity and compassion.
A Sacred Corridor Along the Mau Chhu River
The 108 stupas will be around 15-meter high and placed at the distance of 108 meters from each other, which together will create a sacred corridor along the Mau Chhu River within the GMC.
The number 108 is of great importance in Buddhism and represents the 108 teachings from the Kangyur collection and the beads on prayer malas that contain 108 beads.
The journey towards attaining enlightenment is symbolized by the Jangchub Charten while prayers and calls for compassionate living can also be offered at these sites.
In addition to building sacred objects, Project 108 seeks to revive the Bhutanese concept of zhabtog, which is acting to support community activities by individuals.
Many Many People Join In The Cause
Communities from all corners of Bhutan joined in to go to Gelephu, being accompanied by people from other countries. Over 200,000 of them registered, indicating that the initiative brought in a lot of interest.
As per Damcho Rinzin, the head of Bhutan’s tourists, this project shows the importance of the spirit and the role of faith in the life of the country.
“Besides the raising of 108 sacred chortens in one day, the meaning of this program lies in the faith, generosity and desire of people to help others”, said Damcho accordingly to the information received.
He conveyed his gratitude to various people in Bhutan and the world for their collaboration in the King’s plan.
This initiative focuses on achieving peace, kindness, and taking care of all living creatures and allows international tourists to touch Bhutan’s spirituality beyond its spectacular landscapes.
The Mindfulness City of Gelephu and the Development Vision of Bhutan.
Project 108 is a part of the broader Gelephu Mindfulness City project run by the King in southern Bhutan and it was meant to combine spiritual heritage, peace with nature, innovative solutions, and business options. Its ultimate goal is to achieve economic growth without forgetting about people satisfaction.
The concurrent building of 108 stupas is a concrete example of that concept and unites in devotion and service people together.
Once completed, the stupas will serve as everlasting symbols of Bhutan’s spirituality and as a manifestation of its commitment to the promotion of peace and compassion. With the help of Project 108, the Himalayan kingdom is aimed at showing how culture and community involvement can serve as a means of advancing the idea of sustainable development.
