One goes on a vacation intending to enjoy the view or take pictures from a high cable car vantage point, but not plummet to their death. Such is the heart-wrenching situation in Southern Italy.
Cable cars have always been scenic, but close to Torre Annunziata, Italy, it seems the view has turned deadly. One of the debilitating wires holding the cabin snapped, resulting in a cascade of destruction down the mountain slope. The cabin contained five passengers—Elaine Margaret Winn and her husband Graeme Derek Winn from United Kingdom.
Dream Vacation Ends in Disaster
The Winns shared the cable car with an Israeli woman called Janan Suliman and the operator, 59-year-old Carmine Parlato. In a cruel twist of fate, Partato and the rest of the occupants of the cabin perished in the fall. As of now, he is still battling for survival according to reports.
The situation gets even more unfortunate. The cabin had undergone a routine safety check a mere two weeks prior to the incident. Naturally, this has prompted authorities to initiate a full-blown criminal investigation.
What Went Wrong?
Officials say that the traction cable snapped, which should’ve activated the emergency brakes. And it did—for another bubble lower down the mountain. The second bubble had 16 passengers who were all safely rescued. Unlike the rest of the passengers on board the bubble that was near the summit, however, there was no such luck.
As Castellammare Di Stabia’s mayor elaborated, one set of brakes worked, but clearly not the other. “There was a routine safety check recently,” he relayed to the press in Italy. “But now everything is under the microscope.”
Remembering the Victims
The British and the Foreign Office are yet to confirm identities but are coordinating with the Italians, whilst in the UK. They had originally named Roland Elaine but now it is thought her name was Elaine Margaret.
The Israeli victim, Janan Suliman, was traveling alongside her brother. They were most likely expecting a carefree ride with breathtaking views of Mount Faito, but instead, it turned into an unexpected horror for everyone aboard.
A Long History—And a Tragic Pattern
It is not without tragedy, however. A very similar incident, for instance, took the lives of four individuals in 1960. That recollection continues to haunt the folklore of the region, and now a new one has been added.
So, what was intended to be an extremely enjoyable outing resulted in experiencing heart-wrenching tragedy. This serves as an eerie reminder that even the most mundane activities can suddenly and drastically change.
