Thanks to advancements made in the airline industry, airline travel no longer creates nearly as much anxiety for those flying with their furry friends as it did in the past.
Did you know that pet-only airlines exist?
Pet-only airlines are a recent development and provide an entirely new way for pets to travel. In the past, pets were generally treated as oversized suitcase-type items, but today, they are actually considered the true passengers on these specialty airlines.
However, before discussing how pet-only airlines operate, let’s examine how air travel used to be for pets.
Before Pet-Only Airlines: Not a Great Experience for Pets
In years gone by, if a pet owner wanted to take their dog or cat along when they traveled on an aircraft, there was only one way to do so – through the cargo hold! The cargo hold was typically dark, cramped, noisy, and filled with fear for the great majority of pets flying in it. Many airlines today still maintain restrictive policies related to pets (Documentation, Vaccination Certificates, Import Permits, and Quarantine for the animal at the destination) while the violation of these policies can result in the denial of a pet traveling in the cabin.
Airlines Have Recently Initiated Permitting Small Pets (dogs/cats) In The Cabin With Their Owners
Even though some airlines have begun offering travelers a chance to fly with their small pets (under 8kg), several items of interest will still need to be aware of them.
The Legislative Framework Lags Behind Pet Owners’ Desires
As more and more popular, such as pet travel, has come out of the woodwork. Issues regarding the legislation governing travel with pets still do not seem to be making much progress.
Emotional Support Animals Have Been Made Illegal As of 2021 (Unless They Are Trained Guide Dogs).
On the European side, Due to a 2025 Ruling from the EU Supreme Court, Emotional Support Animals are not allowed to be flown as well.
While that may provide some comfort to many loving dog owners, there has been a substantial rise in the number of private airlines dedicated to the transportation of animals.
Bark Air is one of many private airlines focused on providing the ultimate pet travel experience through personalized service. The company was founded in 2024 and offers the same convenient airport services as first/business class air travel for humans, including dedicated private terminals and less crowded security checkpoints.
According to Craig Skinner, President of Bark Air, the company customizes each pet’s flight experience, providing soothing music throughout the duration of the flight, a large selection of beverages, healthy snacks, a paw/nose balm and (grooming items). Essentially, it is a spa day for pets at a very high altitude.
While Bark Air is certainly one of the first airlines to cater exclusively to transporting pets as cargo, they are by no means the only ones in this niche. A new airline named K9 Jets has been operating since 2023 and offers chartered flights between cities. Additionally, a new startup called Retrievair in the USA has experienced tremendous growth since its appearance on Shark Tank in October 2025 and will continue to expand its dog-friendly air travel options.
This is not simply a trend, but rather, it is emerging as an abundantly successful business model.
Hotels are now participating in the pet travel trend.
The idea of companies that provide pet travel services has expanded into the hospitality industry. Companies like Bark Air provide hotels with all the necessary resources and tools to improve their pet services.
Bark Air’s goal is not only to provide hotels with a dog bed in the corner of the room; it is about creating an entire experience for customers. Hotels can provide customers with products for their pets that have been manufactured with care and concern, as well as provide a pet-friendly atmosphere, and provide real concern for the health and happiness of your pet.
Traveling has historically been about the needs of humans; however, now it is increasingly about the emotional needs of humans as well. Today, our pets are treated as family members; therefore, it is important to treat them as such while traveling.
What really are they looking for?
While pet airlines have the appearance of a novelty at first glance, there is an actual need that pet owners can fulfill by using them. The reason these airlines exist is to relieve the stress of travel for both the pet and the owner and to provide safety and security for both the owner and his/her dog or cat.
In addition to this, travel with cats and dogs was traditionally seen only from the perspective of “getting through it”, but now, travel has expanded to include the pet as an equal partner in the entire process; including an increased level of comfort and luxury for the pet.
So, let’s face it, your dog may actually get a better flight than you will!
