We all know Pattaya for its nightlife, lovely beaches, and never-ending fun. However, aside from stunning tourist sites and the never ending neon lights, there is a side to Pattaya that is not as glamorous. A city full of motorcyclists can be quite dangerous for foreign tourists.
Tourists and Traffic – A Risky Combination
Pattaya has been receiving more and more tourists every single year which directly influences the amount of traffic in the area, particularly during busy tourist seasons. Motorbikes are quite popular among tourists due to their easiness in maneuvering through traffic and convenience. However, they come with their problems. Most tourists are not accustomed to the traffic in Pattaya.
Some visitors have no idea about local traffic regulations while others do not take basic safety precautions such as putting on a helmet. And then, there is the problem of aggressive driving. Either it is the speeding motorcycles or the cars cutting through packed streets, there is absolutely no caution exercised, therefore, endangering everyone around.
Road Conditions Add to the Danger
In case of pathological carelessness and ignorance, Pattaya’s roads can be dangerous. Parts of some roads, especially in heavily attended tourist sections, are cracked, and rough with potholes. In addition, there are no road signs or lights to make things better. Hence, a recipe for accidents is eerily present.
Recent Incident – A Wake Up Call
One painful case of this occurred on March, 20th 2025. A 27-year-old lady by the name Aorawan Rukboon met with a bad motorcycle accident around 9:00 A.M. close to the Khao Mai Kaew Police Checkpoint in Banglamung District. She was, as some witnesses say, riding at a considerably high speed. According to several testimonies, she suddenly lost control of her bike and collided into the rear of a white sedan which threw her off her bike and gave her some serious injuries to the shoulder and arm. This goes to show how dangerous things can be when safety is not put into priority.
Safety Tips for Tourists on the Roads of Pattaya
Pattaya’s roads may sometimes be extremely hazardous, however, there are options available for tourists that can help minimize the risks.
- Always wear a helmet; it is not only the law, but it may also save your life.
- Follow speed limits; driving through crowded areas boasts unwarranted risks.
- Be careful at intersections; People often ignore red signals or don’t look out for vehicles on the crossroad.
- Know the traffic rules of the country – If you are planning to rent a motor bike or car, it pays to learn the rules in minute detail.
- Go to an established rental company – A bike or car that they rent is less likely to break down if it is serviced properly.
Traveling around for tourists can be a dream, however, there is a need to remain careful. A bit of caution can tremendously assist in preventing your dream vacation from turning into a tragedy on the road.
