The Dumb Trend of Hauling Mattresses onto Cruise Ship Balconies!

Story76 Views

Social media sure has its fair share of weird trends, and one of the latest is dragging mattresses onto cruise ship balconies just for kicks or to snap some pics.

Yep, you heard it right – folks are hauling mattresses out onto cruise ship balconies, and it’s become quite the buzz. All thanks to a pic floating around of a couple chilling on a mattress on a cruise ship balcony. That snap got everyone talking over the past year.

According to a report from Yahoo News Australia on Saturday (April 13, 2024), cruise expert Mandy has some wise words: don’t hop on this bandwagon. She’s quick to point out that cruise ship furniture is specially made and isn’t the same as what you’d have in your living room.

“It’s pouring outside. The furniture they’ve got on those balconies isn’t built for that kind of weather,” she adds.

This whole trend started back in March 2023, thanks to writer Sarah Goodwin. She posted a pic of herself setting up a mattress on a cruise ship balcony and urged others to do the same. She swore they wouldn’t regret it.

“It’s just for chilling in the arvo, okay? Definitely not for overnight snoozes,” she says.

But let’s face it, this trend got a lot of flak for being downright disrespectful. People realized that leaving mattresses out there could wreck them and put future guests at risk.

Backing up this sentiment, Mandy tells a tale of someone who found a heap of mold under their cruise ship mattress, giving them allergies. She reckons someone probably took it out onto the balcony, and the humidity did the rest.

As of now, big cruise liners like Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruises, and P&O haven’t said much about their stance on moving furniture.
